If we find ourselves crying during the Publix Thanksgiving commercial or at the end of the episode of Fixer Upper, we exclaim "Hormones... ugh!" We blame them and whoever sits in the White House for our irrational behavior, weepy eyes, frustration, anxiety, etc. We aren't entirely wrong, but in the meantime, I feel like our hormones are saying... HELP a sister (or brother) out please!
18 years ago, I was learning lessons about hormones, as I embarked on my 11 year journey through the muck and mire of infertility ( more on that HERE ). Carrying around labels like Hashimoto's (Thyroid disease), PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), Endometriosis, etc. can be heavy burdens. People don't like to talk about the labels they carry. We tend to only discuss them in a doctor's office setting and sometimes that really well meaning practitioner may not have all the answers. That was my situation. I followed all the advice I was given and I ended up feeling sick, tired and frustrated that my desired result aka a BABY still hadn't happened.
When I opened up to people and helped them see that while I LOVED my dogs, they were not the only "children" I wanted... the magic started happening. First, I had so many people praying for us and that is powerful! It felt to good to get it off our chest and to be open and to know we were being loved and supported in that way. Second, I had so many people open up about their own health struggles and what had worked for them in different areas. This information encouraged me and kept me moving forward in my search for answers.
So, it turns out my hormones, my endocrine system was under assault and it was largely my fault! I didn't know that the B&B Wallflowers, the flowery bath gel, shampoo, and conditioner, the Febreeze, the All Purpose kitchen cleaners, the copious amounts of bleach, the make-up on my face, the lotion I slathered all over my body (only to be followed by matching or complimentary body spray or perfume) and the fragrant deodorant were all wreaking havoc on my system. I didn't know about these dangerous little things seeping into my bloodstream via my skin called "Xenoestrogens" were disrupting my hormone balance and leaving me at risk for much worse! I had no idea then... but I do now! I would be a slothful servant if I didn't share this information with others, too!
So, what are the Xenoestrogens capable of? Causing Estrogen dominance! Could you be dealing with Estrogen dominance? Do any of these sound familiar? If so, you may be dealing with estrogen dominance
- Headaches/ Migraines
- Irregular/ Abnormal and/or painful periods
- Bloating and other fluid retention
- Weight and/or Fat gain
- Depression, Anxiety, Irritability, Mood Swings
- Thyroid dysfunction (cold hands/feet, hair loss, foggy brain)
- Memory loss
- Difficulty Sleeping
- Low libido
- Breast Tenderness, swelling, fibrocystic breasts
- INFERTILITY (including inability to get pregnant and pregnancy loss)
And if you are living in Estrogen dominance... know what else you may be at risk for?
- Hypertension (unopposed estrogen causes an influx of water and sodium into the cells)
- Chronic Thyroid disease (unopposed estrogen causes intra-cellular hypoxia)
- Gallbladder disease (unopposed estrogen promotes bile thickening)
- Histamine release, chronic allergies
- Stroke and Embolism (unopposed estrogen promotes blood clotting)
- Estrogen driven Endometrial and/or Breast cancers!
So, what do you need to do if you think this is you?
Here is a link to the protocol I follow, that has made a world of difference for me!
